Verstappen, Hamilton, and Antonelli: The Battle for Spa-Francorchamps

The Belgian Grand Prix returns to Spa-Francorchamps from July 17 to 19, and the championship picture heading into the weekend is as compelling as the circuit itself. Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, and Kimi Antonelli arrive in the Ardennes carrying very different kinds of momentum, and Friday's opening practice session did nothing to simplify the forecast.

Verstappen Sets the Tone in FP1

Verstappen topped the first practice session with a lap of 1:47.070, a performance that immediately underlined why the Red Bull driver is the favourite to win in Belgium. He has already won at Spa three times, and his confidence through the circuit's high-speed sections is well established. Yet the gap behind him was razor-thin. Hamilton was just 0.145 seconds back, with Charles Leclerc a further 0.062 seconds adrift.

At a circuit where weather, strategy, and Safety Car timing can dismantle a race plan within minutes, a gap of two tenths after a single Friday session means very little.

Hamilton Hunts History

For Hamilton, the Belgian Grand Prix carries weight beyond the championship standings. He has won five times at Spa. A sixth victory would draw him level with Michael Schumacher's record of six Belgian Grand Prix wins. Ferrari, his constructor, holds more Belgian Grand Prix victories than any other team, and the Scuderia has won two of the previous three races.

Hamilton's pace in FP1 was immediate and serious. Ferrari's form across recent weekends suggests the car is competitive, and Spa's combination of long straights and high-speed corners has historically suited their machinery. The case for Hamilton as Verstappen's most dangerous rival this weekend is a strong one.

Mercedes: Still the Championship Standard

Despite Ferrari's recent surge and Verstappen's fast start to the weekend, the broader narrative of the 2026 season belongs to Mercedes. The Silver Arrows have won seven of the first nine races, with Antonelli taking five of those victories and teammate George Russell adding two more. Antonelli leads Russell by 25 points in the Drivers' Championship, while Hamilton sits 32 points behind the championship leader.

Before the weekend, Leclerc himself acknowledged that Mercedes should still be considered favourites at Spa, noting the circuit characteristics could suit their car particularly well. That kind of acknowledgment from a rival driver carries weight. Antonelli may not have topped FP1, but the expectation is that he will be fighting at the front when it matters.

Norris in Damage-Limitation Mode

Lando Norris, who could reasonably have been part of the podium conversation, arrives at Spa carrying a 10-place grid penalty. McLaren made the calculated decision to introduce an additional power electronics component here, accepting the punishment at a circuit known for overtaking opportunities rather than absorbing it at the tighter confines of Hungary or Zandvoort. Norris finished seventh in FP1, while teammate Oscar Piastri, the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix winner, was fifth. A Norris charge through the field on Sunday could become one of the weekend's most watchable subplots.

Podium Prediction

With Friday's pace, 2026 form, and the specific demands of the 7.004 km Spa-Francorchamps layout all considered, the predicted podium for Sunday's 44-lap race is Verstappen first, Hamilton second, and Antonelli third. Leclerc is the clear dark horse, capable of disrupting that order entirely.
